Breast Cancer Carnival

Members of the Women in Medicine (WIM) Committee bravely endured the chilly weather Thursday night as they helped raise money for the Avon Breast Cancer Foundation during aKDPhi’s annual Beat Breast Cancer Carnival. The carnival was extremely successful in the past. And this year’s goal was set to $2000. WIM’s booth featured a cleverly named ‘Pink Pong’ game where people could test their skills at this alcohol-free rendition of the classic beer pong game. Participants were able to purchase a ticket to play for just $0.50.

“We’ve had a great turnout and it’s been pretty steady since AMSA members can receive intercommittee points for playing a round of Pink Pong,” said Monica Abdelmalak, one of the directors of WIM. It was also a great opportunity for WIM members to educate the public on what they are passionate about.

Brittany Connor, a first year UF student and WIM member, was eager to help out at the carnival. “I see myself as very feminist and I also have a few family members who are doctors so this is an exciting way to help out,” said Connor.

After players were successful in getting the ping pong ball inside the cup, they received a prize of either a pink survivor bracelet or ribbon pin while the WIM members congratulated them with their "She's/He's A Winner!" chant. In addition to all the fun and games, WIM made sure to educate the public on what the carnival was all about. “We also provide educational resources as brochures and pamphlets about breast cancer at our booth,” said Abdelmalak.

This is just one of many events that WIM participates in. “This is one of our major activities but we also do a wide variety of other volunteering and philanthropy such as helping at Pleasant Place,” said Deepika Kulkarni, a junior and one of the WIM directors. The WIM Committee will have other events throughout the year so be sure to keep checking for updates!
